As occurs in the nearby Colli Euganei, from time immemorial the Colli Berici (‘Berici Hills’) have been dedicated to the cultivation of grapes as proven by the discovery at a small nearby lake of ‘vitis silvestris’ grape seeds among the remains of prehistoric pile dwellings dating back to the Bronze Age (about 3000 BC).
The particular characteristics of the climate, soil and the environment make the hilly areas between Padua and Vicenza highly suitable for cultivating grapes, thus allowing for the production of a variety of fine wines.
In particular, Mossano and Montruglio were referred to by the Olympic Academician Aureliano Acanti in his poetical work entitled Roccolo Ditirambo (1754) as “two villages with a strong vocation for winegrowing”. Since the later post-war period of the last century the Montruglio agricultural enterprise has been producing Cabernet, Tai Rosso and Tai Bianco wines. The Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon, Tai Bianco and Tai Red vineyards are all located in the valley behind the Villa and, except for the Tai Bianco variety, are all situated on hillsides facing south. Over the last two years the enterprise has also produced Spumante Brut sparkling wines and the Villa di Montruglio Prosecco.
